How Advertising Strategies Adapt to Consumer Media Habits

Discover how changing consumer media habits are reshaping advertising strategies and why streaming audio and podcasts are essential to reaching audiences.

Consumers have all kinds of opinions on the media they engage with, but most can agree on a few things: They want convenience, content personalized to their taste, and flexibility in how they can access it. They want to listen to good music, catch up on their favorite podcasts, and watch entertaining videos when the mood strikes.

Simple enough right? Well, not necessarily. Audiences are increasingly navigating media based on their interests, mood, and preferences rather than sticking to a single platform, playlist, or network. And as mass media consumption becomes more fragmented and niche communities gain influence, advertisers need to look beyond demographics to understand what makes their audiences tick. The good news? Consumers are revealing valuable insights through their listening habits, content preferences, and interactions across platforms.

What these consumer behaviors tell us is that the traditional linear path is gone and giving way to something more dynamic. Consumer media habits keep shifting as new platforms, devices, and content formats emerge, and audiences move across channels throughout the day instead of settling into one. Streaming audio and podcasts have become essential touchpoints along that route. For advertisers, understanding these evolving habits is key to building more responsive, relevant, and future-ready strategies that keep pace with consumers.

How consumer media habits continue to evolve

Consumer media habits are constantly changing, but certain behaviors reveal how, when, and where audiences engage with content. Here's what that looks like in practice.

Increasingly watching video podcasts

Podcasting stopped being an ears-only medium. The majority of podcast listeners still consume audio podcasts, but 46% of them are now video podcast viewers. Video gives audiences another way to engage with their favorite shows without necessarily replacing their audio listening habits.

Preferring ad-supported content

Free content remains a priority for many audiences. Among podcast listeners, 73% agree they prefer free, ad-supported podcast content over subscription-based access. That preference extends across audio generally, where 85% of listeners appreciate how much free content is available today and want the audio they enjoy to be accessible whenever and wherever they are. For advertisers, this creates opportunities to connect with audiences through content they're already choosing to consume.

Consuming content weekly

Audiences are consistently consuming audio content. Over 9 in 10 Pandora listeners tune in to streaming audio weekly or more often. Podcasts follow the same rhythm, with 76% of podcast listeners maintaining a routine of listening to or watching the same shows each week. These established habits give advertisers opportunities to reach audiences through familiar content and recurring listening moments.

Tuning in mostly at home

Sure, audio has the ear of people when they're behind the wheel, but it’s with them everywhere, including around the house. Home is the leading location for online audio, where 57% of listeners tune in. Whether they're relaxing, cooking, or tackling household chores, consumers are making audio part of their at-home routines. For advertisers, these everyday moments create opportunities to connect with audiences beyond traditional commute hours.

Listening while multitasking

Audio moves with people through the parts of the day other media can't always touch. Cleaning and chores rank as a common listening activity, with 72% of streaming audio listeners tuning in while completing these tasks. Even video podcasts aren’t always a sit-down-and-watch experience: 77% of video podcast viewers agree they tend to multitask while watching video shows. Together, these behaviors highlight the importance of advertising formats that can reach audiences as they go about their daily routines.

Co-listening with others

With co-listening, one stream reaches a room rather than a single person. We've found that 83% of listeners listen to streaming audio with others, creating opportunities for brands to connect with audiences through shared listening experiences.

Why advertising strategies must adapt to audience behavior

Knowing the behavior is only half the equation. Advertising strategies are most effective when they translate those habits into real decisions about where to allocate budgets, how to reach audiences, and when creative should show up.

Understand where and how audiences spend their time

Demographics describe who someone is. Listening behavior provides insight into their interests, preferences, and daily routines, giving advertisers a more complete picture of how to reach them. Logged-in streaming platforms can provide privacy-conscious, first-party insights into listening habits, content preferences, and engagement patterns, letting brands build strategies informed by actual audience behavior rather than relying solely on demographic assumptions.

Prioritize reaching audiences across their preferred environments

A listener cooking dinner is in a different frame of mind than one halfway through a workout, and activity targeting lets brands tailor their creative to different listening moments. By aligning messaging with what audiences are doing, brands can deliver more contextually relevant experiences. And audio advertising can inspire action: 56% of Pandora listeners have taken action after hearing streaming audio ads.

Connect during screen-free moments

Much of a daily routine can happen without consumers looking at a screen. Audio accompanies listeners during the drive, the dog walk, and the hour spent folding laundry, creating opportunities for brands to connect during moments when visual ads may be less accessible. And those listening moments can influence actions beyond the screen. Nine in 10 podcast listeners have taken an action after hearing an ad, from looking up a product to making a purchase.

How media consumption trends influence campaign planning

Planning built around channel silos assumes audiences stay within a single platform or environment. But they don't. Media plans should start with audience behavior and work outward, mapping how each channel contributes across the customer journey: building awareness at the top, driving consideration in the middle, and reinforcing messaging as consumers move closer to taking action.

Time spent is an important metric to plan against. But attention deserves a closer look, too. Audio makes a compelling case for greater consideration in media plans, accounting for 21.4% of total media time in the US while drawing only 4.5% of total advertising spend. This disparity highlights an opportunity for advertisers to reevaluate how they allocate budgets across channels.

Audio also helps brands reach audiences they might otherwise miss. Adding streaming audio and podcasts to a SiriusXM campaign can generate +142% incremental reach, and adding SiriusXM and podcasts to a streaming audio campaign can deliver +89% incremental reach. These findings highlight the value of a diversified media mix, where channels work together to expand audience reach rather than operate in isolation.

As the media mix grows, measurement and optimization become even more important. By continuously evaluating reach, engagement, and campaign performance across channels, advertisers can refine their strategies and make more informed decisions about where to invest.

How flexible media strategies improve long-term performance

Flexibility is what turns a media plan from a document into a system. It lets advertisers adjust investments as media habits shift, test emerging channels without abandoning proven ones, and optimize campaigns based on performance insights rather than assumptions. Diversified media plans also help reduce reliance on any single platform, minimize the potential impact of changes to algorithms, audience behaviors, or platform performance.

Audio earns its place in that structure by offering consistent opportunities to connect with audiences. While visual media habits evolve and new formats emerge, audio remains part of consumers' everyday routines, from weekly listening habits to familiar moments at home or on the go. That consistency makes digital audio a valuable complement to other channels in an evolving media mix. Ultimately, long-term success depends on building flexible strategies that continuously adapt to changing consumer behaviors, rather than waiting until those shifts have already happened.
